Job Description
The Preservation Technical Specialist will support the preservation efforts of the libraries including performing various preservation treatments of library material and overseeing the daily operations of the Preservation lab. This position reports to the Collection Maintenance and Management Librarian and has student worker supervisory responsibilities and directs the work of student workers, interns and other staff as needed.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and documented experience working in a bindery or conservation lab; or completion of preservation/conservation/bindery apprenticeship or training program; or equivalent skills and knowledge in the book arts.

Masters’ Degree in Library or Information Science (ALA-accredited) preferred
Must have manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability/desire to work in a production environment
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to train and supervise others
Ability to manage work-flow systems and to set priorities
Ability to work standing up for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects and work with dusty books and library materials

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Collection Maintenance and Management Librarian , oversee the daily preservation lab operations and workflows
Hire, train and supervise student employees
Perform preservation treatment of books, pamphlets, and other print-based materials from the Libraries’ general collections
Complete in-house repairs such as surface-cleaning, re-casing text blocks, replacing spines and endpapers, repairing paper tears, photocopying and tipping-in, replacement pages and constructing a variety of protective enclosures in a production environment
Assess condition for appropriate course of action (i.e. type of in-house repair or treatment, commercial bindery, or purchase replacement)
Maintain inventory of conservation lab supplies
Manage registration process for materials transferred to and from preservation
Oversee contract binding: pre-binding and post receipt processing of materials, quality control of bound periodicals and serials received from contact binder. Maintain in-transit inventory of materials in the bindery cycle
Develop and maintain knowledge of latest trends and developments in the field of Preservation
Assist with disaster planning, preparedness, and response. Help coordinate the disaster recovery operations and emergency preparedness for all of the libraries
Deploy the most efficient means for accomplishing projects to enhance productivity
Participate in Access and Resource Sharing department functions, including participation in departmental policy discussions, professional development, and support of other functional working groups of the department
Evaluate workflows for improvement and efficiency
Other duties as assigned

Secondary Responsibilities:
Participate in continuing education, professional development, and training activities

Physical Requirements
Must possess manual dexterity and attention to detail
Ability to work in a production environment
Daily repetitive motions, sitting, standing, stooping
Ability to regularly lift items up to 50 pounds
Must be able to push hand truck or cart with up to 100 pounds.
Ability to work standing up for extended periods of time
Ability to work with dusty books and library materials
